We took over Herdwick Cottage in 2018 and have fully refurbished it to create a luxury holiday 'home from home', whilst being sensitive to it's traditional and rather humble origins.
We fell in love with the Lakes after honeymooning in Grasmere over 25 years ago and have returned to fell walk and climb ever since. We feel very privileged to share our beautiful Lakeland cottage with new and seasoned visitors to this stunning part of the world and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
We follow rigorous cleaning guidelines and have our 'Good to Go' Visit Britain certification.
We hope to welcome you soon!

Please let yourself in using the 'key lock box' to the side of the front door. Check-in is from 4pm and checkout is by 10am every Saturday.
The Lake District's stunning landscape has inspired poets and artists for generations. Famous for its lakes, mountains and forests, its cultural landscape was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.
Explore England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, its deepest lake, Wast Water, or simply wander through some of the many fells, taking in the beauty and changes that each season brings. We are located just behind the famous 'Bridge House' Ambleside in a quiet road with flat walking access to the village centre.
Ambleside is the 5th most popular starting point for walkers in Britain and the village itself boasts a selection of restaurants, pubs, cinemas, museums and climbing wall as well as children's play park and excellent public transport links to explore the rest of the Lake District.
We offer free on road parking anywhere on Millans Park or Vicarage Road (display the permit in the window). These roads form a quadrangle, so you can drive in a sort of circle round the one-way system to find the nearest space. Parking is free between 6pm and 10am but you’ll need to display the permit for times outside these hours (you can use a 1 hour free disc available from the shops for a short stay if you arrive early). We have always found that even if we can’t park outside straight away, we are able to move the car to outside the door later on. If you arrive early and need to use a car park for the day, please see the guest manual attached for maps of the town which also show the car parks. If you have two cars, we would recommend putting one of them in either the Rydal Road car park which is about 3 mins walk away on the left just past the Bridge House as you are leaving the high street going north , or the Lakes Road car park (which is smaller and 5 mins walk away on the one way system out of Ambleside on the right hand side as you leave to the south).
As the Lake District can get very busy at peak times, when travelling to other areas, we would recommend the bus service which is a wonderful experience in itself (think Harry Potter ‘Night Bus’ with mountains!), so that you can enjoy the view and not worry about parking at the other end.
We are now offering shorter stays (min 3 nights) and weekly discounts of up to 40% out of season, please check the diary for rates and availability!
Please note that we are not able to accept pets.
For your comfort, we can only take up to 5 people including infants.
